Σύμφωνα με την παράδοση, η ονομασία του χωριού σχετίζεται με την εργατικότητα των κατοίκων, καθώς αυτοί, λόγω των σκληρών συνθηκών διαβίωσης, ανέκαθεν ήταν εργατικοί σαν μέλισσες.
Τμήμα του Δήμου Κεντρικών Τζουμέρκων, στο βόρειο άκρο της Περιφερειακής Ενότητας Άρτας, οι Μελισσουργοί είναι ένα τυπικό ηπειρώτικο χωριό με πετρόχτιστα σπίτια αξιόλογης αρχιτεκτονικής.
Τζουμερκοχώρι χτισμένο σε υψόμετρο 860, σε απόσταση 72 χλμ από την πόλη της Άρτας και 65 χλμ από την πόλη των Ιωαννίνων, οι Μελισσουργοί έχουν ξεχωριστό χρώμα χάρη στα τρεχούμενα νερά και πλατάνια της περιοχής, τον ποταμό Μελισσουργιώτικο και τα γειτονικά ελατοδάση.
Την πάνω πλατεία του χωριού (Εθνικής Αντίστασης ή Μαγαζιά) στολίζουν η εκκλησία του Αγίου Νικολάου (χτίστηκε το 1778, ανακατασκευάστηκε περί τα μέσα του 19ου αιώνα και φέρει ξυλόγλυπτο τέμπλο και ιδιαίτερα αξιόλογες τοιχογραφίες), βρύσες, το κτίριο του παλαιού δημοτικού σχολείου και παραδοσιακές ταβέρνες.
